DoCoMo and MTS Form Strategic i-mode Partnership

NTT DoCoMo, Inc., Japan’s leading mobile communications provider, and Mobile TeleSystems OJSC, the largest mobile phone operator in Russia and the CIS, today announced that have formed an exclusive strategic partnership under which MTS will launch i-mode in Russia and other CIS countries. As a result of this agreement, i-mode will become available through 13 operations. This long-term agreement, signed today by these two leading mobile operators, will allow MTS to offer i-mode services to its in Russia via its GSM/GPRS/EDGE networks, with DoCoMo providing its brand name, know-how and technology. MTS plans to introduce i-mode in Russia before December 2005.

DoCoMo's Global 3G Handset

DoCoMo has introduced the N900iG [.jpg image], the first 3G FOMA handset compatible in approximately 115 countries/regions. The handset goes on sale 25 December 2004. N900iG users who want to use the handset abroad must subscribe to DoCoMo’s World Wing 3G roaming service for i-mode packet communications, videophone, SMS and voice calls in other countries/regions.

TCL Buys NetFront for BREW

ACCESS has announced that TCL Mobile Communications, China’s second largest cellphone maker, has adopted ACCESS’s browser NetFront for its TCL1688 handset, the first BREW mobile phone released in China. The TCL1688 is supplied to China Unicom. Used widely worldwide in digital consumer appliances, NetFront supports WML, HTML, cHTML, and WAP2.0.

KDDI Unveils MS Wi-Fi Phone

KDDI and Fujistu have introduced a prototype smart phone, or “hybrid information terminal,” that will be available to visitors attending the Aichi World Expo 2005, which begins here in March and runs through to the end of September. The ‘Love and Mate’ [.jpg] (yes, that’s what they’re calling it) handset comes in Orange and Blue; both feature Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition for PocketPC software for PDA and phone operation, and Windows Media Player 9. This is one of the first deployments of Windows on a phone in Japan.

DaTang Mobile and Dilithium Networks Unveil First TD-SCDMA Video Phone

DaTang Mobile successfully demonstrated the first TD-SCDMA Video Phone in Beijing this past week. The video phone, using the Dilithium Networks market leading 3G video telephony protocol stack, achieved high quality end-to-end video telephony with 15 frames/second video communications on 64 kb/s bearer. In addition to the basic video telephony function, DaTang Mobile also demonstrated the “Picture in Picture”, “Picture Shelter” and “Voice Shelter” enhanced functions. The demonstration also featured Dilithium Networks patent pending AnswerFast technology, which significantly reduces the session set-up time.

NEC Picks Ericsson for 3G

Japan’s NEC Corporation has selected Ericsson Mobile Platforms for use in the launch of its next generation global WCDMA/GPRS handsets. The first products to be made available within the first half of FY2005 (April 2005 – September 2005), will be based on the Ericsson U100 platform. NEC feels that with the addition of Ericsson Mobile Platforms to its portfolio, NEC will be ready to offer a wider range of 3G mobile terminals to meet the various demands of 3G mobile operators and end users.
