Index to Form TV Joint Venture

Five private television broadcasters have entered into final negotiations with Index Corp., which distributes content to mobile phone users, on forming a company to distribute sports information to Internet portal sites, according to sources close to the broadcasters. The new company would distribute preliminary reports and images of a wide range of sports including soccer, baseball and basketball to portal sites for access by personal computers and mobile phones, the sources said.

Feature Film Mobile Marketing

Mobile phone technology is at the cutting edge of studio advertising — though less in the U.S. than in certain foreign territories, where it is far more advanced than here. “What we did for (the June actioner) ‘Batman Begins’ was we developed our first fully dedicated WAP,” Warners international marketing president Sue Kroll says. “We did that in the U.K., France, Germany and Spain and basically promoted a short code that allowed people to access the site and had all kinds of video vignettes, interviews and information about the movie. We are working to do something in Japan that’s similar for (the recently released) Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

Finding the Camera Phone Creator

Back in July of this year, analyst Jon Peddie was on a mission to find the inventor of the camera phone — a product category that is responsible for a significant portion of the current mobile phone boom. Peddie found the first camera phone, but couldn’t identify the precise inventor, and wasn’t sure if there even was a single person who could be found. TG Daily picked up where Peddie left off — and got lucky in Japan. (Seems it was not Sharp’s J-SH04 after all! — Ed.)

Voce says it will provide “first class” personalized wireless services, to become available this year, include unlimited calling, data downloads, “velvet glove” customer service, the latest technologies, and a new cell phone every four months, according to the company.

Capcom: New Mobile Division

Capcom has revealed plans to establish a new Los Angeles-based Mobile and Interactive Division to expand presence in the U.S. mobile entertainment industry. Headed by Midori Yuasa, general manager and senior vice president, the new division plans to release more than 10 titles in North America from the extensive library of Capcom products. In the coming year, consumers will be able to play classic Capcom favorites such as 1942, Ghosts ‘n Goblins, Mega Man and Resident Evil anywhere they like. Capcom began exploring the mobile world in 1999 in Japan, making them one of the first companies to start developing mobile strategies.
