NEC's Packet Core Node: A New Era for Mobile Operators

NEC Corporation is accelerating the delivery of its Advanced TCA(R) (ATCA) based packet core node to bring a new era and more benefits for mobile operators. After its first commercial shipmentin September 2003, the number of shipments of the SGSN and GGSN (*) for mobile telephone operators exceeded over 100 systems. The systems in commercial operations process rapidly growing internet traffic for applications such as packeti‚šed voice and video,as well as new services like on-line gaming over the 3G Mobile PacketNetwork.

Symbian 3G Collaboration

Sharp has signed an agreement with the Japanese division of Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications [Press Release in Japanese] to collaborate on development of cell-phone handsets based on the Symbian operating system for NTT DoCoMo’s FOMA 3G service in Japan. The two companies plan to share selected hardware while developing 3G phones that will be unique to the Sharp and Sony Ericsson brands.

More Linux 3G Phones Coming

NEC and Panasonic have developed three Linux-powered 3G mobile phones to be introduced in Japan in the coming months — NEC’s N900iL, NEC’s N901iC, and Panasonic’s P901i. Of the three, only NEC’s N900iL [see WWJ’s video] is currently shipping. The N900iL is a dual-network 3G/VoIP handset that works as a 3G mobile phone (using DoCoMo’s W-CDMA/FOMA technologies), VoIP terminal, or both simultaneously.

InterVideo Delivers MPEG-4 Solution for 3G

InterVideo, Inc., a pioneer in advancing DVD and MPEG-multimedia software technology, announced today that its Mobile Player and Mobile Studio will support major cellular phone operating systems (OSs) on Texas Instruments Incorporated’s (TI’s) OMAP(TM) processors, including Symbian OS(TM), Windows Mobile(TM), and Linux(R). InterVideo will demonstrate its technology on both TI processor lines on handsets at the TI booth during the 3G World Congress and Exhibition, which is being held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, November 16-17, 2004.

NEC Establishes Linux Partnership

MontaVista Software and NEC Electronics Corporation have announced a strategic partnership to integrate and optimize MontaVista Linux for NEC Electronics’ embedded hardware platforms. Through the partnership, MontaVista will provide MontaVista Linux platforms to NEC Electronics for use in its mobile phone, digital consumer and car navigation solutions. The integration of technologies will enable device manufacturers to build high quality products, with lower total development costs and reduced time-to-market.

Sharp's New 4GB Hard Drive PDA

Sharp will begin marketing November 10 the latest model in the Personal Mobile Tool Zaurus series of PDAs. The SL-C3000 PDA [.jpg image] is the first in the industry to feature a built-in 4GB hard drive to enable users to carry large-volume data such as business documents, photo images, music and video. It can also be doubled as an external hard drive when linked to a PC via a bundled USB cable.

ACCESS Announces Mobile Professional Version of NetFront Internet Browser

ACCESS, a global provider of mobile content delivery and Internet access technologies, today announced the availability of NetFront v3.2 for the Nokia 6670 smartphone and other Series 60 smartphones. NetFront v3.2 for Nokia Series 60, the latest version of the world’s most widely deployed and actively used embedded browser, provides an optimum browser solution for Series 60 mobile professionals. NetFront v3.2 for Nokia Series 60 will be available as a preinstalled application on the MMC (MultiMedia Card) included with the new Nokia 6670 phone and will also be available from Nokia Software Market (www.softwaremarket.nokia.com) and Handango (www.handango.com) later this month.

OMRON Launches EPC-compatible UHF-band RFID Reader/Writer

OMRON Corporation, a leading Japanese RFID systems provider, is launching the V740 series EPC reader/writer for UHF-band RFID tags in North America. The first UHF tag reader/writer from a Japanese RFID device manufacturer, the unit supports both EPC Class 0 and Class 1 protocols. It is also designed to accommodate Generation 2 protocol by EPC Global (C1G2) by upgrading its firmware when these specifications become available. Additionally, the product supports standard network protocols including DHCP, UDP/IP over Ethernet, 820.11x (Wi-Fi), HTTP and SNMP, and its superior network adaptability enables its software to be easily implemented from remote sites.

ACCESS Announces Global Profile for NTT DoCoMo's i-mode Service
