JCI Acquires Arxceo

A vendor of Linux-based network security and intrusion detection devices has been acquired by a major Japanese MVNO. Japan Communications Incorporated says that Arxceo’s devices will help protect mobile VoIP phone users, including dual-mode handset users. Arxceo markets Linux-based SMB firewall appliances, as well as small, Linux-based firewall devices. The small devices are placed between wireless networks and corporate networks, and provide behavior-based intrusion detection and prevention, the company says.

ACCESS to acquire PalmSource

ACCESS Co., Ltd., a global provider of mobile content delivery and Internet access software, and PalmSource, Inc., provider of Palm OS, a leading operating system powering next generation phones and mobile devices, today announced they have signed a definitive agreement for ACCESS to acquire PalmSource in an all-cash transaction valued at USD $18.50 per share of PalmSource common stock , or approximately USD $324.3 million (approximately %35.9 billion). ACCESS’ USD $18.50 per share offer represents an 83% premium for PalmSource stockholders based on the market closing price of USD $10.09 on September 8, 2005.

DoCoMo Props Up Symbian

An extensive article in Wireless Week makes it clear that Motorola is only developing some Symbian handsets at the request of carrier partners “such as NTT DoCoMo”, which have invested in Motorola to keep the Symbian development going. Motorola’s primary OS emphasis is on its Linux/Java platform and Microsoft’s OS, neither of which is as expensive in royalties or implementation costs as Symbian, says Greg Besio, Motorola’s corporate vice president of mobile devices software.

TIVR H.264 Video Decoder Software for Mobile Devices is Available for Licensing

TIVR Communications, a technology startup involved in development of high-performance, low–power multimedia software solutions for next-generation wireless handsets, today announced the release of H.264 Baseline Profile video software decoder optimized for Mobile/Handhelds. TIVR’s H.264/AVC decoder benchmark results show that Real-time (25 fps) decoding of QVGA (320×240) resolution H.264 Baseline Profile streams coded at 256 kbps is achievable on ARM9 based devices running at 220 MHz. Till now industry is struggling to provide 25 fps decode of QVGA resolution H.264 content on Mobile devices. TIVR’s AVC decoder makes it a reality thereby enhancing the experience of mobile users.

Fujitsu Launches USX Field Connectivity Software Solution

Fujitsu Limited today launched its new USX(TM) field connectivity software package, which is designed to help accelerate customer innovation in the field and bring ubiquitous connectivity to the front lines of businesses. The new software package will be commercially available in Japan beginning today. The USX package is comprised of server software and client software. It leverages sophisticated presence management(*1) functions developed by Fujitsu, capable of delivering ubiquitous networking phone features that automatically route calls over the optimal network, such as wireless LAN (via internet or intranet) or internal or external phone lines, depending on the location of the mobile handset user. It also supports an optional Push-to-talk over Cellular/Wireless (PoC/W)(*2) function, enabling a user to transmit voice or data messages to multiple recipients simultaneously.

Fusion’s patent-pending gateway technology takes incoming number-based calls and works with Skype’s database to route them to Skype IP telephony subscribers using the 050- prefix, similar to NTT Communications’ Click-2-Connect IP phone service, also using the 050 designation. Skype works with Windows, Mac OS X, Linux and PDAs using Pocket PC. Users typically connect through their PC. Is Skype, the no-cost free Net telephony provider, finally going to turn a profit?

France Telecom & ACCESS Develop Rich Media Solutions

ACCESS announced it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with France Telecom for the joint development of a complete wireless Internet solution based on ACCESS’ products and services. This R&D partnership will enable both companies to collaboratively design and deploy innovative, rich media mobile Internet technologies for France Telecom mobile customers. The R&D department of France Télécom and ACCESS are committed to leveraging resources and sharing expertise to develop products based on the NetFront browser framework. The technologies that will be supported within the browser framework include SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics), streaming video, SMIL (Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language), and other rich media and animation technologies.
