Looking to spread its wireless world into Asia, QUALCOMM Monday said it has signed a non- binding memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Asia Pacific Broadband Wireless Communications (APBW), the first operator in the region to commercialize 3G services using CDMA2000 technology.
Nobody may be willing to bet who TDSAT will crown king, GSM or CDMA, but on the global stage, GSM has checkmated CDMA. Latest numbers from UK-based EMC, the world’s leading provider of specialised market intelligence on wireless communications, confirms a whopping 81% of new mobile subscribers worldwide opted for GSM in the first quarter of 2003. By contrast, global appetite for CDMA appears to have dwindled, accounting for a mere 13% of incremental global mobility subscriptions.

AT&T Wireless today announced agreements with Nortel Networks and Ericsson to deploy what is expected to be the first commercial W-CDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple band Access) wireless network in North America. The W-CDMA network can support high speed VPN access, audio and video applications, as well as advanced location-based and m-Commerce features.
Yamaha Corporation, the world’s largest manufacturer of musical instruments and a leader in digital audio, announced today that it will expand its “Ringtone@YAMAHA” ringing melody distribution service in China giving customers using CDMA mobile phones of China United Telecommunications Corporation (China Unicom) a vast choice of different melodies for their handset ringers. The service to distribute harmonic 16- and 40-tone ringing melodies nationwide will begin on July 1, 2003, permitting China Unicom CDMA mobile phone subscribers.
