I4U carried a reference to a Nikkei report that Secom and bag maker Kyowa Corp. would release a line of backpacks for students that feature built-in terminals compatible with Secom’s locational information service, Koko Secom. In Koko Secom, GPS (Global Positioning System) technology is used to track the location of special terminals. (WWJ has prices for the backpacks and service.)
NEC has announced that it will start marketing their live-broadcast system using DoCoMo’s 3G FOMA network. The “MobileStream” brand name is designed for PC card-type FOMA terminals; live video images can be transmitted at the speed of 200 kbs. The system uses the H.264 codec and is priced from 7.3 mn yen; sales of 500 systems, to TV stations and local governments for disaster prevention, are expected over the next three years.
NEC Corporation today announced that it has succeeded in the development of a Web page analysis engine that realizes ease of viewing of Web pages on a variety of terminals, such as televisions, PDAs, and mobile phones, despite differences in display resolution and screen size.
Happy Thanksgiving to WWJ’s US readers and for those in the UK, we’ve glad tidings of an early Christmas present: i-mode will launch on mmO2 in mid-2005, according to the Nihon Keizai Shimbun. A Reuters report earlier today quoted the paper as stating that NTT DoCoMo has reached a basic agreement to offer i-mode to Britain’s mmO2 Plc. What started with an under-attended press conference almost six years ago in Tokyo (when DoCoMo was generating some 10 percent of mobile revenues from SMS-type messaging) will now land in London. The Big Question: Will i-mode gobble up Vodafone live!’s lunch right on home turf?
UbiNetics and Renesas Technology Corp. have signed an agreement for the development of the first RF (radio frequency) solution capable of supporting W-CDMA and HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) in the frequency bands used in Japan, Europe, and the US. HSDPA is the high-speed data transmission system which accelerated W-CDMA. Its system realizes 14.2-Mbps maximum high-data transmission speed. The announcement marks the second time the companies have partnered for joint RF solution development.
Renesas Technology has announced the development of the OpenGL ES Library 3-D graphics software for the company’s SH-Mobile high-end application processor. A development solution for multimedia applications for mobile phone systems, OpenGL ES Library will be available from December 2004 in Japan. As a specification for 3-D rendering, the OpenGL graphics API has practically attained the status of a worldwide standard for PCs and workstations.
NTT DoCoMo, Inc. and its eight regional subsidiaries announced today they will change the launch date for the SH901iC 3G FOMA handset, which was unveiled on November 17 and had been planned to be marketed on November 26, 2004.
Will prepaid phones pay the price for allegedly rising crime rates in Japan? NTT DoCoMo president Masao Nakamura spoke of discontinuing prepaid phone services at a recent press conference and others are calling for an outright ban. Japan’s close (some would say too close) private/public-sector interaction seemed to shadow his statement that the company needed to act considering the growing number of fraud cases using prepaid handsets. It’s only coincidence, we’re sure, that one of DoCoMo’s foreign competitors stands to lose big from shutting down prepaid. And last week, a European business organization pointed out just how wacky a ban would be.

Dilithium Networks estimates that 80% of 3G Mobile operators, network equipment vendors, and handset manufacturers use Dilithium Networks Analyzer (DNA) to perform 3G-324M protocol compliance, interoperability testing and QoS measurements of mobile networks.
McAfee is offering subscribers to Japan’s mobile carrier, NTT DoCoMo, a mobile content scanning technology designed to provide protection against future mobile threats. McAfee VirusScan Content Scanning technology, the industry’s first mobile virus scanning solution, was jointly developed with NTT DoCoMo and is offered as a built-in service on the new FOMA 901i-series 3G mobile phones.
