• DoCoMo to Expand Flat-Rate Services

DoCoMo has plans to introduce flat-rate billing options for all types of mobile data services by the end of 2008 according to this article from the Asahi Shimbun. DoCoMo has already introduced a flat-rate system for i-mode and subscribers for their flat-rate portal access service has exceeded 10 million. However, details of the planned total flat-rate billing options have yet to be decided.

“We have to see how much of a workload (the flat-rate services will add) to our networks,” DoCoMo President Masao Nakamura told The Asahi Shimbun on Thursday. “But the day will come when data communications services accessed using personal computers will also be offered at fixed charges.” “We want to start flat-rate systems for data communications services through personal computers in 2008, at the latest,” Nakamura said.

Considering the competative offerings already on tap this (eventual) move comes as no surprise.
