DoCoMo Introduces New 3G Handsets and i-Channel Service

DoCoMo announced today that they will launch “i-channel,” a news and information service, and compatible handsets, the 3G FOMA 701i-series. The service will be launched concurrently with three FOMA 701i models, which are to be released shortly. The three new 701i handsets (from Mitsubishi, NEC and Panasonic [.PDF]) will be compatible with the i-channel service and all standard FOMA services and functions, including videophone, Chaku Uta ring songs, Chaku Motion ring videos, Deco Mail (HTML mail), i-appli (Java) and Macromedia Flash applications. DoCoMo also introduced two hybrid units today; the ‘fashionable’ FOMA DOLCE and the GPS-enabled SA700iS from Sanyo.

Subscribers to i-channel will automatically receive various content, such as news, weather, entertainment reports, sports news and horoscopes, delivered to the phone’s standby screen as telop text. By pushing the i-channel button, a Flash-based UI channel list will appear and the user can select the channel they want to view.

Ecrio Announces $3M Investment for 3G Mobile Software

Ecrio Inc., a global provider of advanced software for mobile phones, today announced that Diamond Capital Company Ltd., the venture capital arm of Mitsubishi Tokyo Financial Group Inc., has invested $3M in its new strategic investment round. They join current investors Nexit Ventures, Cypress Ventures/CIR Ventures and CDB Webtech. “We are very impressed by Ecrio’s technology and the traction the company has generated in the mobile phone software market for advanced 3G services,” said Mr. Tetsuya Mori, Director of Diamond Capital.

Panasonic Mobile Bullish on China

Japan’s Panasonic Mobile Communications aims to have a two-digit share of China’s mobile phone market by the end of the year. The firm is betting on better tie-ups with Chinese mobile operators and a focus on the country’s high-end handsets to achieve its goal. “We expect to grab a 10 per cent share of China’s handset market in 2005,” said Taro Itakura, managing director of Panasonic Mobile Communications’ China operations.

New DoCoMo 902i Series 3G FOMA Handsets Coming Soon?Digging deep into Japan’s blog space over ice coffee this morning turned up interesting rumors (and some detailed specs) concerning DoCoMo’s next generation of 3G FOMA handsets. The dog days of summer is about the right time for an announcement from Big D’s Sanno Park Tower HQ on models slated for release sometime in Q3 and we’re willing to bet that these rumors may just have some substance behind them. While WWJ subscribers can log in for the full juice, we will say up front that more than one blog has mentioned 10 new models coming from all the usual suspects (NEC, Panasonic, Fujitsu, Sharp, etc.) plus a couple foreign-made entries for what should be called the 902i-series.

Wireless Japan Expo: Video ReportLast week’s Wireless Japan Expo was a bit of an anticipointment. With the exception of a few prototype handsets from NEC, WWJ had already reported on much of the technology on display. DoCoMo and Panasonic highlighted the fun of their customizable 901i handsets. One area included display-only custom covers by Japanese artists and designers. MoBaHo!, that joint venture of 88 Japanese and Korean companies beaming 40 channels of video, audio and data programming to handheld receivers, cell phones and car-mounted tuners from their satellite mostly recycled displays from last autumn’s show. Though not really new, Fuji Film’s pocket-sized infrared printer PiVi drew in expo goers with photos next to a mock-up of the Japan National Soccer Team. KDDI showcased their newly announced tie-up with Felica (and Suica) via demonstrations of au 3G phones zipping through JR ticket gates and playing games on Sega arcade machines equipped with Felica readers.

Panasonic Ramping up Production

Panasonic Mobile, will more than double the number of handset models for export this fiscal year to about 10, according to a report in the Nikkei Shinbum. Panasonic has already made agreements with more than 10 carriers, mostly in Europe and projected shipments of about 8 million units this fiscal year, up 10% from fiscal 2004. The new models will be introduced starting in July through year-end, primarily targeted for Europe and China.
