ACCESS Data Application Suite Selected to Enhance Datang's TD-SCDMA Solution

ACCESS and Datang Mobile Communications Equipment Co., Ltd. (Datang Mobile) announced a licensing agreement to bring ACCESS’ data application suite to Datang Mobile’s client end TD-SCDMA offerings. Datang Mobile is one of the major mobile communication technology, equipment and service providers in China, and is recognized as the creator and leader of TD-SCDMA, China’s homegrown 3G standard. ACCESS’ data application suite is a comprehensive solution for 3G that includes NF browser, a full- featured mobile browser, a Java Virtual Machine as well as multimedia mail clients.

NTT DoCoMo to Launch N700i and P700i 3G FOMA Handsets

DoCoMo, Inc. announced the launch of the N700i and P700i, the last two handsets in the new 3G FOMA 700i series, through DoCoMo sales channels nationwide on March 11. The N700i comes in three stylish body colors, which can be combined with any of ten snap-on Style Plus custom jackets for a total of 33 color combinations. Both the handset body and custom jackets have antibacterial surfaces. The P700i, the lightest FOMA handset available, features an expansive 2.2″ QVGA LCD screen and high-performance 1.25-megapixel camera. The body is stylishly texturized and color choices are thoughtfully matched to preinstalled icon-based menus and standby screens.

It may look as though WWJ has been devoting too much editorial space to FeliCa coverage lately, but the fact is: FeliCa continues to be hot news. On Thursday last week, No. 3 carrier Vodafone announced they, too, had signed up to deploy Sony’s contactless payment technology on Big Red cellys, likely by fall this year. But I wonder if all Japanese consumers will be equally happy to store their hard-earned cash on a losable, spamable, stealable cell phone?

NTT DoCoMo to Stop Accepting PHS Applications

DoCoMo announced today that they will stop accepting new applications for PHS (Personal Handyphone System) mobile phone services as of April 30, 2005. As a result of the decision, DoCoMo will post an approximately 61 billion-yen impairment loss on a consolidated basis and an approximately 21 billion-yen special loss on a non-consolidated basis. Accordingly, DoCoMo has amended its consolidated and non-consolidated financial results forecasts for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2005 (April 1, 2004 – March 31, 2005), which were announced on October 29, 2004.

Today’s proggy is not only a fun one — showing some great cellys from the October CEATEC show — but it also reconfirms the reality of the relationship between cell-phone makers and cellular operators in Japan — in this case, Panasonic and DoCoMo.

NTT DoCoMo to Stop Accepting New Prepaid Mobile Phone Applications

DoCoMo announced today that the companies will stop accepting new applications for “Pre-Call®” prepaid mobile phones on March 31, 2005. From April, the company will suggest to users that they subscribe to alternative services, such as mobile phone rental services or “Limit Plus,” which enables users to limit monthly charges. DoCoMo launched the Pre-Call service in May 1999. The number of subscribers peaked at about 210,000 in March 2001, after which the number began decreasing. About 80,000 customers were using the service as of January 2005.
