Alcatel Close to China 3G Deal

French telecoms equipment maker Alcatel is nearing a deal with a Chinese peer on cooperating to build 3G mobile phone networks using the Chinese TD-SCDMA standard, a senior executive said. Alcatel’s position in China has also been bolstered by gains in market share, Christian Reinaudo, the company’s head of Asia Pacific operations, said on Monday. “We’re in very serious talks with local Chinese firms to do something together,” Reinaudo said at the Reuters Asia Technology Summit.

Japan Radio Licenses CEVA-Teak DSP Core for Mobile

CEVA Inc., the leading licensor of Digital Signal Processor (DSP) cores and communications solutions to the semiconductor industry, today announced that Japan Radio Co., Ltd., a leading manufacturer of electronic professional communication equipment, has licensed the CEVA-Teak DSP core to power their baseband radio communication solutions. Japan Radio Co., Ltd. (JRC) is embedding CEVA-Teak DSP Core in a baseband chip for its communications equipment to deliver complete signal processing.

iPAQ's 1xEV-DO SwingPhone

Korean Telecom’s booth at ITU Telecom Asia 2004 is showing off the new HP iPAQ rw6100-series Pocket PC (the “iPAQ SwingPhone”) using the CDMA 1X EV-DO system combined with a wireless LAN 802.11b module. The PDA-style terminal [.jpg image] uses KT’s “NESPOT” service enabling high-speed mobile network connection using the Windows Mobile 2003 OS on the Intel PXA270 520MHZ chip. It boasts 128MB of flash memory over the 64MB of onboard RAM.

Softbank Blocked from 3G Spectrum

Softbank Corp., Japan’s largest Internet provider, complained that its plan to offer a new mobile phone service could be thwarted by the government’s refusal to provide the necessary bandwidth. Masayoshi Son, the billionaire founder and chief executive of Softbank, told a news conference Monday that the company wanted to begin offering 3G service utilizing CDMA2000 technology. But he said the telecommunications ministry’s decision to allocate the key 800mhz band exclusively to NTT DoCoMo Inc. and to KDDI Corp., is blocking Softbank from launching the service.

China Telecom's 3G Plan

China Telecom will adopt a cautious approach to the introduction of its 3G mobile network once it has received its license, state-run Xinhua News Agency reported. Industry watchers had previously speculated that China Telecom were planning to spend RMB90 billion (US$10 billion) on the construction of a nationwide 3G network, using WCDMA technology.
