GRIC Providing Wi-Fi Service for Japan Telecom Customers

GRIC Communications, Inc., a leading provider ofsecure, managed broadband and global remote access solutions for enterprises and serviceproviders, today announced a milestone Wi-Fi agreement with JAPAN TELECOM, one of Japan’slargest telecommunications service providers. The agreement, the first Wi-Fi roamingagreement by JAPAN TELECOM with a partner, provides 1.7 million customers of JAPANTELECOM’s Open Data Network (ODN), the company’s ISP service, with seamless, global mobile broadband service, “powered by GRIC.” JAPAN TELECOM customers will have access to the GRIC TierOne Network(TM), which includes the world’s largest mobile broadbandfootprint, using the GRIC-branded mobile office client.

Intel Japan Ships Sample 3G Chips

Intel Corp’s Japanese unit said on Thursday it expected to supply a chip that combines communications, software applications and memory functions in a single piece of silicon for use in NTT DoCoMo Inc’s 3G phones as early as the end of 2004. The new chip, which is expected to be cheaper, more energy efficient and occupy less space than the separate chips currently used in 3G mobile phones.

Mascot Capsule Inc., a division of HI Corporation of Japan, today announced that theindustry-standard Mascot Capsule Micro3D Engine, currently installed in over30 million handsets worldwide, is now optimized and available for the ATITechnologies’ IMAGEON 2300 co-processor for ultra-high performance mobile3D applications. Now supporting both the OpenGL ES and the J2ME Mobile3D Graphics standards (JSR-184), Mascot Capsule is the most widely adoptedgraphics platform for mobile applications and content.

Fresh Fears Over CellPhones

The safety of cellphones has been called into question, again. This time the scientific community is paying very close attention. A Swedish study links mobile phones to brain damage, in rats, anyway. The findings have re-ignited a longstanding debate among scientists and cellphone manufacturers over cellphone safety.

Symbian/Linux, DoCoMo Orange Seed Smart Phones

Service-centric platforms are pushing towards Linux and Symbian OS, a move toward flexibility and customization being pushed by DoCoMo, Vodafone and Orange will play an important role in pushing smart phone sales to 150 million units, according to research firm ABI. “With increasing competition and high churn rates,” explains ABI analyst Kenil Vora, “operators have felt the need to differentiate their products.”

Wireless Links for Digital TV Related Data

Dai Nippon Printing has begun providing a service to enable cellphone users to access content related to broadcast and communications satellite TV and terrestrial digital TV programs aired by transmitting 2D codes from their handsets. The service uses a bandwidth allocated to data broadcast in digital TV broadcast, and allows cellphone users to access program-related content from handsets while watching a program.
