New W950i Walkman Phone

Sony Ericsson has introduced the W950, an ultra-slim, ultra-stylish, UMTS-enabled device with 4GB of onboard storage complete with touch screen for simple navigation through music genres, playlists, individual songs or music albums. The music player within the W950 has the functionality and sound quality of an equivalent standalone device. Its 4GB storage can take up to 4,000 songs and the sound quality, delivered on high quality headphones, makes listening to music a real pleasure. A new graphic-rich interface on the Walkman player makes it easy to navigate around the music library by song, artist or playlist and now it’s possible to search visually by browsing through album covers using the stylus and touch screen.

Vodafone K.K.'s Anti-Spam Results

Vodafone K.K. announced its findings today from a December 2005 survey conducted among Vodafone K.K. customers on the effectiveness of anti-spam measures. The results indicated that over 90% of customers using the URL link mail blocking function first introduced in March 2005 experienced a decrease in the number of spam mails received. In addition, approximately 80% of customers using the function said spam mails fell to a level of 0 or 1 per day.

Sanyo and Nokia to JV for U.S.

Sanyo Electric Co. has reached a basic agreement with Finland’s Nokia Corp. to set up a 50-50 joint venture in the US as early as next autumn to make 3G mobile phones, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported without citing sources. The new joint venture, which will likely be located in San Diego will produce CDMA2000 3G cell phones, the business daily said. For Nokia, the joint venture will likely help it absorb Sanyo’s know-how, particularly in the development of thin handsets, according to the report.

Freescale RF Technology to Further Reduce Size and Cost of 3G Handsets

Freescale Semiconductor is developing a highly integrated, single chip RF solution for 3G mobilephones. Targeted for the Japan market, this RF solution supports tri-band WCDMA and quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE. The RF solution is based on Freescale’s advanced 90nm RF CMOS process technology and delivers an antenna-to-bits functionality in asingle chip. Additionally, it is capable of meeting Category 8 HSDPAand HSUPA requirements.

Global 3G Platform Announced

NTT DoCoMo, Inc., Renesas Technology Corp., Fujitsu Limited, Mitsubishi Electric Corporation and Sharp Corporation today announced that they will jointly develop a comprehensive mobile phone platform combining a single-chip LSI for dual mode handsets supporting HSDPA /W-CDMA and GSM/GPRS/EDGE, and core software such as operating systems. The new mobile phone platform will help accelerate the global adoption of W-CDMA services including FOMA, and lower the costs of these handsets. The companies expect to have the platform developed around Q2/FY2007 (July-September).

NEC Mobile Solutions and Handsets at 3GSM

NEC Corporation announced that it will display a series of high-end mobile handsets including the world’s thinnest 2.5G fold-type camera-phone, a prototype HSDPA 3G mobile phone and other end-to-end mobile solutions and handsets at 3GSM World Congress 2006, Barcelona. At this year’s 3GSM World Congress, NEC will unveil a selection of integrated products and services that show how NEC is adding value today to its customers by providing end-to-end solutions.
