KDDI Unveils New Concept Models

The KDDI Designing Studio in Harajuku has 4 new concept handsets, including the next version of their popular InfoBar series, on display in their main-floor exhibit space. The so-called InfoBar 2 – although it’s the third version we’ve seen? – comes in 5 colors and has a cool speaker system built into the re-charger cradle. The companies AU Design Project continues to set the pace for future model development, if you’re in Tokyo the exhibition runs through 16 November.

DoCoMo Announces Specs for Any OS

NTT DoCoMo has announced new terminal specifications, developed jointly with Intel Corporation, that will enable mobile phones to be customized with additional desired operating system or application. The specifications provide an open domain, which is separate from the phone’s default domain containing the preinstalled operating system and applications. A controller enables switching between the domains. The open domain will enable a company, for example, to install an original browser and scheduler, and set an internal security policy for the terminal while individuals will be able to install their own personalized game software.

NEC, Panasonic Form ESTEEMO

NEC Corp., Panasonic, and Panasonic Mobile Communications Co. Ltd., a unit of Matsushita, have formed a new company, ESTEEMO Co. Ltd. for the manufacture of mobile handsets. ESTEEMO was established based on an agreement signed by the three companies on July 27, 2006, and will carry out the development of mobile handsets, including the development of a common software and hardware platform.

Sanyo Epson Develops 1.1mm Display

Sanyo Epson Imaging Devices Corporation has announced the development of a 2.2-inch amorphous silicon TFT liquid-crystal display (LCD) that is just 1.1 mm thick, making it ideal for use in mobile phones and other portable devices. The Company succeeded in developing this 1.1-mm-thick amorphous TFT LCD by using ultra-thin components, including the backlight, polarizing plate and glass substrate. These features are considered to be ideal for displaying video and watching “One Seg” digital TV broadcasts viewed on mobile phones in Japan.

SoftBank Mobile Rolls New Handsets

SoftBank Mobile have just issued a press release [.PDF in Japanese] announcing that four of their recently unveiled handsets – the 910T, 810SH, 811SH and 705P – will commence sales nationwide on Saturday, 7 October. The update has not been posted on their new website as of this moment, however we do look forward to seeing them come up to speed there as the old vodafone.jp site now resolves to softbankmobile.co.jp.
