Pandemic Tracking via Mobile – Part 2

The Japan Times picked up on this thread, regarding the use of mobile phones to manage pandemics, with details of a funding proposal to the Ministry of Communications. Basically a disease-tracking system using GPS, the SoftBank subsidiary plans to run an initial pilot by outfitting 1,000 elementary school students with handsets to trial the program. This is one of several dozen approved funding proposals and, as we mentioned earlier, a natural attention grabber considering the combination of recent panics and predictable privacy issues.

NTT Com Offers Free Eye-Fi WLAN

NTT Communications just announced the launch of their new “HOTSPOT connect” service offering free connectivity to specific Internet services via their HOTSPOT WLAN network in Japan. The first offering – dubbed “HOTSPOT connect x Eye-Fi” – will allow users to upload photos and videos from cameras, camcorders and other portable devices that are equipped with an Eye-Fi SD memory card which has built-in Wi-Fi capability. The HOTSPOT connect platform is openly available to anyone, including non-subscribers to HOTSPOT, normally a paid service.

Nico Nico Adds Live Mobile Video

The folks at Niwango have announced a beta trial for users to setup a live broadcast channel from and for their mobile handsets. According to the announcement [.PDF in Japanese] they will enable up to 500 concurrent viewers starting June 1st, with plans to scale up to support a total of 3,000 viewers per stream in July. They have positioned this as an experimantal service and for the initial launch it will only be available to premium members who also subscribe via i-mode. Japan Trials Pandemic Tracking via Mobile

According to this post on the Asahi Shimbun, the Ministry of Affairs and Communications (MIC) has a proposal to run an experiment later this year, across the country using 2,000 cellphone volunteers, to record potential encounters between people infected with a contagious disease. From what we can tell, the proposed trial will track and collect GPS data for time and location so if someone is found later to be infected the agency, with some help from the telecom operators, would be able to identify and notify people who had may have had recent contact.

Peru Decides to Adopt 1Seg Standard

The Transport and Communications Minister of Peru, Enrique Cornejo, has announced the country will officially adopt ISDB-T, the Japanese terrestrial digital TV system of technology. Cornejo made the announcement after a meeting between the head of State, Alan García, and the Prime Minister of Japan envoy, Shunichi Yamaguchi, at the Government Palace. Japan will carry out several programs to assist in the implementation of digital television in Peru, such as human resource training and economic cooperation.

The always-on Jean Snow posted an interesting tip on a groovy style QR Code campaign running for Louis Vuitton. Produced by SET, and designed by Takashi Murakami, this is definitely a level-up from the good old black & white standard. While we have covered several unusual 2D barcode offerings in the past, such as Design QR and Ishinokoe, this next-gen full color version certainly raises the bar.

Hitachi Releases Gazopa Image Search

Hitachi has announced the beta release of GazoPa, an iPhone app which allows users to search for similar images on the web by uploading any photo captured with camera on iPhone, will be available free at Apple’s iPhone App Store. This makes it possible for users to search for images similar to the items in front of them since GazoPa uses image features such as color and/or shape, users can look for images without typing any words.

KDDI launches New Handset Brand

KDDI Unveils New Handset BrandThe good folks over at KDDI have announced [in Japanese] a new lineup of devices, tagged “iida” for innovation, imagination, design and art, with 3-models on launch to follow in the foot steps of their in-house AU Design Project. The G9 slider, Misora clamshell and stylish collaboration with Yayoi Kusama, details are available Here, along with teasers for more units to come.

We note the Solar-powered concept model on display during CEATEC 2008 seems to be in the pipeline and the Pico Projector which can also connect to several other AU handsets as well. All of these devices are on display now over at the Designing Studio in Harajuku!

Engagement Marketing with QR Codes & 1Seg

Lux is running a very cool campaign in Shibuya this week utlizing 1Seg digital TV broadcasting with huge QR Codes on ad posters. They have setup a temporary display, outside ‘the’ fashion central 109 building, which calls for users to scan the code in order to get instructions on how they can tune-in (spotcasting on channel 34) for more details. The content awaiting them includes a mobile micro-site with a promotional tv commercial, featuring Catherine Zeta-Jones, along with a slick call-to-action for trendy girls to audition for a future campaign.

MobiActions Gaming For Toshiba

The good folks at Mobiactions are in the news again with another exciting mobile interactive game campaign to promote Toshiba’s new Note PC’s in Japan. The Toshiba branded game uses the latest Mobiactions with Veeplayer mobile interactive video and voice response (IVVR) technology so users can dial in and immediately play a fun game that allows them to score points and win prizes.
