DoCoMo's Deal in Guam Challenged

DoCoMo’s proposed purchase of GUAMCELL and HafaTel is being opposed as it “presents a risk to national security.” A petition has been filed by Teleguam Holdings, but on the other hand Guam Governor Benigno R. Fitial has thrown “his full support” behind the plan saying that consumers stand to benefit from lower costs and better services. If the purchase went through DoCoMo would capture between 55% and 65% of combined market share on Guam for mobile radio and wireless phone services, according to the petition, filed with the US Federal Communications Commission.

Softbank Exec Confident of Outdoing Rivals

Softbank president Masayoshi Son expressed confidence that the Softbank group will outdo NTT DoCoMo and KDDI in Japan’s mobile phone service market. The Softbank group, including Yahoo Japan, has been stronger than rivals such as NTT DoCoMo in Internet services, Son told its first general meeting of shareholders since the Internet investor acquired the Japan unit of British mobile phone company Vodafone in April.

KDDI Making Moves Overseas

KDDI Corp of Japan has signed a joint venture agreement with the UK’s BT Group to start offering global communications networks services from August. According to a statement from KDDI, the new alliance will target Japanese companies with overseas operations as part of the carrier’s plan to strengthen its worldwide operations by building new broadband networks at lower costs. According to a report in the UK Financial Times, pair aim to generate revenues of USD1 billion from the alliance within three to five years.

DoCoMo Testing 2.5Gbit Wireless Network

According to a recent report, DoCoMo is testing a new network standard that could send DVDs to handheld devices in about 10 seconds! The prototype uses a combination of Multiple In Multiple Out (Mimo) technology and a tweaked version of quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) and is capable of delivering 2.5Gbits/sec to users travelling at 20Km per hour. Mimo, which is used in a the draft 802.11n Wifi standard and turbo versions of existing Wifi products, uses a combination of several antennas and clever processing to boost data rates.
