DoCoMo 3G Subscribers Become Majority

NTT DoCoMo has issued a press release stating that users of their 3G FOMA service surpassed the 2G Mova subscriber base as of 18 June.

According to the PR:
NTT DoCoMo, Inc. and its eight regional subsidiaries announced today that DoCoMo’s 3G FOMA™ service surpassed the 2G mova™ service in number of subscribers on June 18. Launched in October 2001, the service has grown due to its rich lineup of content, high-speed broadband capability, high-quality voice/video, wide range of handsets, attractive billing and discount plans, and extensive coverage.

In fact, big D pulled into the lead for most 3G users per carrier in January, and the over-all percentage of 3G mobile contracts in Japan became the majority in February.

No mention of the impending roll-out of HSDPA, or so-called 3.5, in coming months with the new NEC handset due to hit the street anytime now. We doubt it will take 5 years to get 50% upgraded to the next level.. 🙂
