UQ Selects Fujitsu's Mobile WiMAX
Fujitsu has announced that its outdoor base station for mobile WiMAX, BroadOne WX300, was selected by UQ Communications for the company’s nationwide WiMAX services infrastructure in Japan. UQ is jointly owned by KDDI, Intel, JR East, Kyocera, Daiwa and the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ, and intends to begin offering commercial WiMAX service in Japan starting in 2009 according to the press release issued by Fujitsu.
As a critical part of its infrastructure, the company has selected the Fujitsu BroadOne WX300, the world’s smallest outdoor WiMAX base station, for its outdoor base stations. The BroadOne WX300, which was developed by Fujitsu to be light, energy-efficient, and the smallest base station in its class, will accelerate the spread of wireless broadband access throughout Japan.
While delivering high-power, high-capacity data transmissions with two high-output transceivers, the unit is the world’s smallest outdoor macrocell base station, with a weight of approximately 20 kilograms and volume of 20 liters. By combining world-class energy efficiency with the world’s smallest base station enclosure, Fujitsu has significantly reduced the costs associated with installing and operating base stations, thereby contributing to the global deployment of mobile WiMAX infrastructure.
Meanwhile, it appears that UQ will run WiBro trials early next year with help from Samsung.
