Japanese telco NEC and Siemens Communications announced that they are assisting Hutchison 3G Ireland in deploying its W-CDMA/UMTS 3G network. The announcement represents the eighth Hutchison 3G network deployment that NEC and Siemens have been involved in. NEC and Siemens are the suppliers of 3G network solutions to Hutchison 3G in Austria, Hong Kong, Italy and the UK as well.
Last week, the Japanese Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications announced that Japan’s 2010 – 2025 MHz spectrum would be allocated solely to IMT-2000 TDD technologies. This paves the way for broadband wireless networks using UMTS TDD, also known as TD-CDMA in Japan; the first commercially deployed IMT-2000 technology for unpaired spectrum. Optimized for high-speed data, UMTS TDD is already used by operators and manufacturers worldwide and has emerged as a leading standard for Broadband Wireless Access.
The mobile phone industry Tuesday heard loud and clear from Nortel and BB Mobile, a Softbank Group company, when the pair announced test calls demonstrating uninterrupted high-speed voice and data sessions. The test calls, completed on a live (UMTS) 3G network and an 802.11 wireless LAN, exhibited a seamless hand-off of voice and data services between a 3G network operating in the 1.7-GHz frequency band and a WLAN, the companies said, claiming the development dials up a new benchmark in convergence.

MTC, the world’s premier mobile phone operator, is taking steps to boost its global 3G presence and is participating in the forthcoming 3G Mobile World Forum to be held in Japan this week. The telecommunications giant confirmed that it had signed up to become one of the platinum corporate sponsors of the prestigious event, which is being run for the fourth time from January 12 to 14 2005 in Tokyo. The Forum is expected to attract the world’s leading 3G operators, with the commercial application of the technology at a crucial stage and the industry now faced with a choice of options as to how it moves forward.
Alcatel today announced that it has been selected by China Netcom Group, one of China’s incumbent operators, to deploy a 3G field trial network in Beijing. This agreement strengthens Alcatel’s position in 3G in China, having already successfully deployed a similar 3G trial network with China Telecom earlier in the year. This contract was won through Alcatel Shanghai Bell, Alcatel’s flagship Chinese company. Alcatel will provide China Netcom with Alcatel’s end-to-end field-proven Evolium(TM) UMTS solution based on the successful 3G products from Evolium SAS, Alcatel’s joint venture with Fujitsu. This solution includes the state- of-the-art UMTS Multi-standard Base Stations (Node B), a Radio Network Controller (RNC) and the core network elements.
