SoftBank Mobile Rockin in May

When the TCA subscriber numbers came out on Thursday the champange corks were popping in Shiodome. For the first time ever the number 3 operator (J-Phone, then Vodafone and now SoftBank) gained the most net customers (162,400) on the month beating KDDI’s 138,500 and nearly double DoCoMo’s 82,700. While their Yahoo! portal also added more clients than EZweb and i-mode the company also managed to boost their 3G accounts up by nearly 500,000 month-on-month to total 8.6 million or 50% of their total subscriber base.

Gemini Mobile Announces New Investors

Gemini Mobile has raised an additional financing round of $5 million from Japan’s ACCESS, Aplix Corp. and Nomura Securities. Previous investor, Mitsubishi-UFJ Capital, also invested in this latest round. The new funding follows the recent $20 million round from Goldman Sachs announced in March. The new financing will be used for general business purposes including continued momentum of Gemini’s international expansion efforts.

Veepers Powers Eshaberi Mail for KDDI

Pulse Mobile announced that the Veepers character animation technology will be pre-installed on all 2007 Summer “au” WIN branded phones from KDDI. Eshaberi Mail (talking mail) allows customers to create naturally talking avatar movies with lip synchronized animations by combining images such as photographs and illustrated characters. Users can also record their own voice which is used to drive characters’ animations.

KDDI Announces 15 New Handsets

Mark May 22 on your calendar under Tokyo mobile madness. In the space of a few hours we had an avalanche of new handset models – 27 in all – announced by both KDDI au and (see our previous post) SoftBank Mobile. The Okura hotel was swarming at 10am as the wraps came off au’s Summer 2007 lineup and of course they have their usual dedicated, and slick, Flash site online Here.
