3G Competition Heating Up
Foreseeing that demand for 3G phones will get on track in Europe and North America this year, sparking competition with rivals in Japan, Samsung and LG are turning up the heat to market their new 3G models to customers in these regions. Mobile phone makers in Japan such as NEC, Panasonic, Sharp and Sanyo, which have concentrated on supplying W-CDMA phones to carriers in Japan, are also reportedly poised to focus more on global markets this year.

Cellcos and handset manufacturers here are counting on the seemingly limitless Japanese craving to trade up to the trendiest and newest feature-packed cellies to push cash flow forward. Right behind the recent roll out of DoCoMo’s shiny, feature-packed 3G FOMA 901i-series comes a new line of four “Mova” (the carrier’s 2G brand) handsets targeting niche buyers. Lets take a look at these babies as each one has a distinctive feature targeting a specific, finicky, not-yet-ready-for-3G keitai shopper.
He’s hot, he has superhuman fighting skills, an enormous broadsword, black leather pants, and a really big motorcycle — and he uses a DoCoMo P900iV 3G celly. Yeah, baby! He’s Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy VII and the all-new DVD Advent Children — and he’s not afraid to talk on the phone. NTT DoCoMo and handset maker Panasonic scored big time in a comprehensive tie-up with Final Fantasy series producer Square Enix securing very visible handset placement in the hugely anticipated DVD movie of Square’s most enduring Final Fantasy saga.
