eAccess Announces 3G Trials

Broadband Internet provider eAccess announced at a press conference here Thursday that it will start W-CDMA experiments in late January in the 1.7-GHz spectrum by partnering with Fujitsu. eAccess President Sachio Senmoto appeared confident that Japan’s telecoms ministry will approve the company’s application to offer mobile services starting in 2006. The trials include performance testing of W-CDMA base stations and a speed evaluation of next-gen HSDPA (so-called Super 3G).

Fujitsu Partners to Offer All-CMOS Single-Chip Wireless USB

Fujitsu Limited and Staccato Communications, Inc. announced a partnership under which they will provide all-CMOS, single-chip wireless universal serial bus (USB) and ultra-wideband (UWB) solutions for the global marketplace. CMOS single-chip wireless USB products are compliant with Multiband OFDM Alliance (MBOA) UWB specifications. Sampling of these chips from Fujitsu and Staccato Communications is scheduled for 2005, moving the companies closer to volume production and commercialization of these chips, targeting the consumer PC, digital home appliance, and mobile phone markets.

Fujitsu Develops Breakthrough Technology for Mobile Base Station Amplifiers

Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd. today announced the development of a technology that enables low-cost production of gallium-nitride(GaN)(*1) highelectron mobility transistors(HEMT)(*2), a key technology in mobile base station amplifiers for 3G and beyond. This breakthrough technology reduces GaN HEMT production costs to less than one-third that of conventional levels, thereby contributing to the realization of lower-cost GaN HEMT-based amplifiers. The technology is designed to enable practical use of compact, more energy-efficient mobile base stations using GaN HEMT. Details of this technology were presented at the International Electron Device Meeting (IEDM) 2004 held in San Francisco last week.

Alcatel Selected By China Netcom to Deploy 3G Trial Network in Beijing

Alcatel today announced that it has been selected by China Netcom Group, one of China’s incumbent operators, to deploy a 3G field trial network in Beijing. This agreement strengthens Alcatel’s position in 3G in China, having already successfully deployed a similar 3G trial network with China Telecom earlier in the year. This contract was won through Alcatel Shanghai Bell, Alcatel’s flagship Chinese company. Alcatel will provide China Netcom with Alcatel’s end-to-end field-proven Evolium(TM) UMTS solution based on the successful 3G products from Evolium SAS, Alcatel’s joint venture with Fujitsu. This solution includes the state- of-the-art UMTS Multi-standard Base Stations (Node B), a Radio Network Controller (RNC) and the core network elements.

NEC's 128MB for Mobile

NEC Electronics Corp. and its subsidiaries in the US and Europe today introduced the industry’s first Pseudo Static Random Access Memory (PSRAM) device [.jpg] designed in accordance with the Common Specifications for Mobile RAM (COSMORAM) Rev. 3, a memory interface standard developed and promoted jointly by Toshiba, Fujitsu, and NEC Electronics for the mobile handset market.

FOMA 3G Fuel-Cell Announced

DoCoMo, Inc. announced today the joint development of a prototype [.jpg image] micro fuel cell for 3G FOMA handsets. The prototype, manufactured by Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd., is expected to greatly extend FOMA handset usage time once it goes into commercial production. The prototype has the same basic specifications of other FOMA handset rechargers and will be compatible with all FOMA handsets. Further development of the prototype is expected to be completed by the end of fiscal 2005.
