Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications AB has pushed back the launch of its first 3G mobile broadband phone in Europe and Asia by several weeks to early January as the Japanese-Swedish joint venture continues interoperability tests with wireless operators. The Z1010 will support 2G GSM and GPRS technologies, as well as the new 3G mobile broadband networks based on WCDMA technology.
Yang Zhiqiang, deputy general manager of the Technical Department of China Mobile, said as the whole market is not ready for 3G in China, China Mobile will also watch carefully on the development of the three standards. “We believe WCDMA will be the best 3G technology standard form GSM as it enables smooth network migration and support 3G services at the lowest cost through scale efficiency,” she said.

Obara admitted that DoCoMo is “behind” KDDI, with the latter pushing all sorts of mobile-WLAN technologies to potentially hook into a slab of Japan’s 12.3 million in-auto car navigation (car nabi) systems. In a separate development, we heard that Seiko is adding a color screen, but not a camera function, on its Wristomo PHS phone. Unsurprisingly, they are not planning to mount a CCD chip because it’ll make the wearers’ wrist limp from the extra weight, and the extra battery power needed might be another issue. KDDI and Okinawa Cellular Telephone is pleased to announce that in collaboration with Asia Pacific Broadband Wireless Communications Inc. (APBW), GLOBAL PASSPORT, the global roaming service that enables customers to use their mobile phones overseas will be launched in Taiwan. With this launch of the service in Taiwan, GLOBAL PASSPORT will now cover 12 countries and regions, and approximately 73% of Japanese overseas travelers will be able to take the advantage of the roaming service.
KDDI Corporation and Okinawa Cellular Telephone announced that the total cumulative number of users for the 3G mobile phones (CDMA2000 1x) being offered by the two companies has surpassed ten million on September 16. Sales of CDMA2000 1x au mobile phones began on April 1, 2002. The ten million mark was surpassed less than eighteen months after the original release.
NTT DoCoMo, Inc. announced today that on September 13, 2003 the company will begin marketing the F2402, the first data-card type terminal capable of high-speed packet transmission in both the uplink and downlink at a maximum rate of 384 kbps.

KDDI has announced a contract with Hutchison CAT Wireless Multimedia Ltd., a leading cellular phone carrier in Thailand, for the construction of a high-precision global positioning system (GPS). The contract is based on the gpsOne system which KDDI presently offers in Japan in cooperation with NEC as EZ NAVI, and is worth a total of approximately 1 billion yen. In constructing the new system, KDDI will cooperate with Snap Track, Inc., regarding the gpsOne system license and technological support.
Talking to an analyst friend today, we came across the question, how many packets are there in a typical 10-minute video clip encoded for a 3G phone? We asked ourselves this question because, just now, the local press in Japan has caught up with DoCoMo’s plans to roll out HSDPA in late 2004, about a month after WWJ reported on it..!!
