As the use of mobile cameras has spread west from Japan, it has been the dark side of photo-messaging that has grabbed headlines. A tsunami of moral panic has followed the adoption in Europe and the US of camera mobiles, focusing mostly on their lewd, pornographic potential or the simple invasion of privacy.
Boasting camera phones, Japanese mobile phones are rapidly making inroads into the domestic market and secured a two digit market share alerting domestic companies. There are concerns that Korean companies set up strong bulwark as Nokia and Motorola, the no. 1 and no. 2 mobile phone makers in the world, pulled out of the domestic market or secured a paltry 3 ~ 4% outmaneuvered by home-grown major companies such as Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics and Pantech & Curitel.
ROHM CO., LTD recently developed the BU1594GS, a multimedia image processor LSI. This product is a one-chip LSI designed for cellular phone models that are becoming increasingly more functional with advanced features including a camera function. This one-chip LSI, which is ideal for the double-folding models of cellular phones, makes it possible to process major signals in the LCD (liquid crystal display) panel (i.e., the upper panel) of the cellular phone.
NTT DoCoMo, Inc. and its eight regional subsidiaries announced today that they will begin marketing the P505i on August 8, 2003. At a trim 19.9 mm when folded, the new model is the slimmest in the 505i series of enhanced 2G handsets.
Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd and Sony Corporation today announced that an agreement has been reached whereby Samsung is licensed by Sony to manufacture and sell Memory Stick media. Under this agreement, Samsung will begin in-house manufacturing and sales of Memory Stick media from the third quarter of 2003.
According to analysts at IDC, our need for handsets seems almost insatiable as far more phones were sold in the second quarter compared to the same period in 2002. The worldwide market for handsets took off in the second quarter of 2003, reflecting continued consumer demand for mobile telephony. According to IDC’s Worldwide Handset QView, worldwide handset shipments grew by 19.2% year-over-year in 2Q03 and increased sequentially by 6.7% to 118.3 million units.
