LG Electronics' Vision for 3G
LG Electronics announced its vision of “Global Top 3 by 2006,” a vision to rank among the top three handset makers in the world, on June 4 in the presence of 2006 employees. LG plans to run global R&D centers in China, Europe, then in North America, Asia/Central Asia and Latin America. The company integrated GSM and CDMA handset units into one business group as of June 1st, and is gearing up for the launch of their one-chip, dual-mode “world phone” integrating CDMA and GSM.
LG Electronics is also determined to reduce the dependence on import of key components including camera modules and batteries through solid cooperation with other LG affiliates and raise the portion of premium digital appliances such as WCDMA mobile handsets, dual-mode world phones, EDGE phones, swivel camera phones, camcorder phones which are equipped with digital camera, A/V system and broadcasting and data processing functions. The company also plans to establish the Telecommunication Equipment & Handset Research Center in Korea integrating CDMA and UTMS labs and expands R&D manpower from 1800 to 2500 this year and 5000 by 2007 to secure product leadership.
