iBurst Officially Launches in Sydney
Personal Broadband Australia (PBA) announced that its eagerly anticipated iBurst 1 Megabit per second wireless service has been officially launched. PBA’s iBurst service is Australia’s first mobile broadband network. Invited guests attended the launch and included representatives from shareholding companies ArrayComm Inc, Mitsubishi Corporation Japan, Kyocera Corporation Japan and Mitsubishi Australia. See recent WWJ video interview with Dr. Martin Cooper about this project.
PBA CEO – and newly appointed chairman – Jim Cooney hosted this landmark event. “This evening’s launch is the culmination of three years of dedicated work pointed squarely towards adding mobility to broadband here in Australia,” said Cooney.
“Today, Sydney, later this year Melbourne, Canberra and Brisbane, and then our full national rollout in 2005. This will provide a fully mobile 1Mbps service to approximately 75 per cent of the Australian population and 95 per cent of Australian businesses,” Cooney continued. “Beyond that, the technology roadmap for the iBurst service has the expansion potential to achieve speeds of 4Mbps and 8Mbps per user not too far down the track.”
Marty Cooper, executive chairman of ArrayComm, founder of PBA, developer of the first mobile phone and the man dubbed, “Father of Mobility” also flew in from the United States to address guests who attended the launch. http://www.iburst.com.au
