Fujitsu announced on June 28 that it has added an RFID tag chip with 256B of FRAM (ferroelectric random access memory) to its FerVID family of RFID tag chips. Designed using a 0.35-micron process, the MB89R119 runs at a clock speed of 13.56MHz and supports a wireless communications range of 70cm and a data speed of 26.48Kbps. The chip is sample-priced at 50 yen (46 cents). Fujitsu will launch sales on August 1, aiming to sell 5 million units per month.
InnoPath Software (formerly DoOnGo Technologies), today announced that KDDI Corp., a leading wireless operator in Japan, has deployed InnoPath’s DeltaUpgrade Plus end-to-end solution to provide seamless OTA delivery of advanced services for KDDI handset users. The service was launched initially with handset model W31T and W32SA, and will be expanded to other new handset models. With KDDI’s rollout, three major wireless operators in the United States and Japan have now commercialised InnoPath’s solution on live wireless networks, managing over 50 million devices with an additional 2.5 million added every month. InnoPath is the only end-to-end OTA device management company actively updating handset software in commercial deployments.

The mobile phone industry Tuesday heard loud and clear from Nortel and BB Mobile, a Softbank Group company, when the pair announced test calls demonstrating uninterrupted high-speed voice and data sessions. The test calls, completed on a live (UMTS) 3G network and an 802.11 wireless LAN, exhibited a seamless hand-off of voice and data services between a 3G network operating in the 1.7-GHz frequency band and a WLAN, the companies said, claiming the development dials up a new benchmark in convergence.
Digital Fountains DF Raptor technology has been standardized by 3GPP, the 3rd Generation Partnership Project, as a mandatory component of the Multimedia Broadcast/Multicast Service (MBMS) for 3G cellular networks. Commented Frederic Gabin, 3G Standards Project Leader at NEC, “Digital Fountain’s FEC provides the best of all worlds: low bandwidth overhead, low processing requirements for client devices, and effective protection of MBMS file transfer and streaming services from packet loss over 3G wireless channels.”
