Maxis, Sony Ericsson and RIM announce BlackBerry Connect for P910i

BlackBerry Connect from Research In Motion enables BlackBerry wireless email services to be used on the P910i, while maintaining the existing P910i experience and functionality. The P910i is a high-quality communications tool for voice calls, text and picture messaging and email, as well as providing full PDA/organizer functions. In addition, it is a camera-phone capable of recording video and still images and also provides a good gaming experience on the 262K color touch-screen. The wide range of applications available for download enables the P910i to do much more than make voice calls, thereby increasing its value for both consumers and operators. The P910i is based on the open Symbian OS v7.0 and the established UIQ user interface.

Symbian Boasts Leap in Shipments

Smart-phone operating system developer Symbian released figures that indicate a big jump in demand for devices based on its software. Some 7.8m Symbian-based handsets shipped in Q2 FY2005, the three months to 30 June 2005, Symbian said – three times the figure for Q2 FY2004, 2.6m. As a privately held company Symbian did not publish financial performance figures.

Kyocera Plans New LCD Factory

Kyocera Corp. is planning to implement a capital investment program worth 100 billion yen [about USD$1 billion] in fiscal 2005, an increase of 60 percent from fiscal 2004, according to Kyocera President Makoto Kawamura. “We are pushing a plan to build a factory for liquid crystal-related products in Kagoshima Prefecture” and other parts-making facilities elsewhere, Kawamura said in an interview.

Vodafone Japan Recruits Sony Exec.

Vodafone KK, the struggling Japanese unit of the world’s largest mobile company, has recruited an executive from electronics icon Sony known for his ability to read consumer trends. The Sankei Shimbun daily quoted a Sony executive as saying Nozoe, 56, was “the man who knows consumer trends best in Sony”, will become senior executive vice president of Vodafone KK as of September 5 and from October will head the marketing unit dealing with subscribers, Vodafone said late Monday.

Intel Verifies Connexion by Boeing

Connexion by Boeing and Intel announced an agreement to enhance and promote high-speed, in-flight wireless Internet service. The companies have successfully completed compatibility testing with Intel’s Centrino-based laptop configurations, making Connexion by Boeing the first in-flight Internet service to be verified through Intel’s Wireless Verification Program, according to the companies. They said that Connexion by Boeing is the only high-speed wireless Internet, data and entertainment connectivity service for commercial airlines and their passengers as well as for operators of private and government executive jets.

Samsung's SCH-V670 Roaming Handset

Samsung Electronics have announced the release of their SCH-V670 handset [ .jpg image ], which apparently provides automatic roaming services [Via: Anycall?] between Korea and Japan. The specs indicate it runs on an EV-DO chipset, supports .PDF file viewing, has an integrated MP3 player and touts a “New Concept” Flash-based UI. It even has a GPS support function to help those Korean businessmen WWJ sometimes sees wondering around downtown Tokyo!
