Jazelle for New DoCoMo 3G Phones

ARM has announced that their Jazelle technology will be deployed in a new line of FOMA handsets by NTT DoCoMo. Emerging applications such as mobile games and business tools place increased performance and power demands on Java technology-enabled handsets. Through ARM’s partnership with Aplix Corporation, a global leader in deploying Java technology in mobile phones, ARM Jazelle technology is being adopted in the DoJa/Java platform for FOMA handsets, which is being jointly developed by Aplix and NTT DoCoMo.

OMRON to Ship EPCglobally Compliant RFID Products

Omron Corporation, a global leader in automation, sensing and control technologies, announced today it will ship an IC tag inlay compliant with Class 1 Generation 2 (C1G2) of EPCglobal specifications. Sample shipments, the first from any Japanese manufacturer, will start in October to suppliers of major retailers, label converters and others. Mass production is scheduled to begin in February 2006*. The sample shipped IC tag inlay conforms to the UHF band 902-928 MHz used in the U.S., and is also compliant with EPCglobal Class1 Generation 2 (C1G2), as defined by EPCglobal, the international standardization organization.

Official Nintendo Mobile Service

A recent report from the Nikkei reveals that Nintendo has licensed its properties for use as mobile phone content. According to this official Nintendo site [ in Japanese ], the service will be named Nintendo Mobile, and will begin on Japanese service provider NTT DoCoMo on October 17th, KDDI(au) on October 20th, and Vodafone on November 1st.

Vodafone's Mobile Music Search

Vodafone K.K. announced that on 1 September 2005 it launched a new Music Search service on its mobile internet service Vodafone live!, so customers can find Chaku-Uta, Chaku-Uta Long Version, and Chaku-Uta Full music tracks faster and with greater ease. For the price of communication charges alone, the Music Search service lets customers search Chaku-Uta and Chaku-Uta Full music track content by artist name. After inputting the artist’s name (even partially) in either kanji, hiragana, alphabet letters or numbers, Vodafone live! official artist song content is searched according to a given keyword and links to artist information pages are displayed.

IrSimple, a High-Speed Infrared Communications Protocol Adopted as a Global Stan

ITX E-Globaledge Corporation, NTT DoCoMo, Sharp Corporation and Waseda University have jointly developed IrSimple*1, a high-speed wireless communications protocol using infrared. IrDA*2 (Infrared Data Association), an industry organization that develops and standardizes specifications for infrared communications, has decided to formally adopt the protocol as its standard. IrSimple achieves faster data transmission speeds (at least 4 to 10 times faster than at present) by improving the efficiency of the current infrared IrDA protocol embedded in many mobile devices such as mobile phones. In addition, the IrSimple protocol also maintains backward compatibility with the existing IrDA protocols.

Wi-Fi Trial on Tokyo Trains

A new high-tech suburban Tokyo train has been launched with the promise of a wireless Internet service allowing passengers to surf the Web on the move. The semi-private Tsukuba Express links Akihabara, Tokyo’s discount electronics heartland, with Tsukuba, a campus town 58 kilometers (36 miles) to the north. For now the Wi-Fi wireless Internet service, offered by NTT BP and Intel, is only on trial in the train carriages and five of 20 stations along the line.
