Kyocera Wireless and PCTEL Collaborate

Kyocera Wireless and PCTEL Inc. announced their collaboration on a Voice Call Continuity (VCC) solution for dual-mode Wi-Fi/CDMA handsets. The solution, which incorporates PCTEL’s Roaming Client – Voice Enabled (VE), is being demonstrated on a prototype Kyocera handset. VCC technology allows a dual-mode handset to make seamless handoffs of active calls while moving between Wi-Fi and CDMA air interfaces. The new VCC solution integrates Kyocera’s CDMA voice, user interface and SMS features with PCTEL’s VoIP, SMS Over IP, single-number roaming and active-call handover functionality.

NTT Rolls Out WiMax in Okinawa

Alvarion announced that NTT West Okinawa has successfully adopted the the companies BreezeACCESS VL WiMAX system at 4.9 GHz to answer their Tier 1 carrier requirements for offering wireless broadband services and fast Internet access to residences and municipalities on the Okinawa islands of Tokashiki, Zamami and Aka. This OFDM technology implementation features extended reach of more than 30 kilometers at high capacity of up to 54 Mbps to enable carriers and other service providers to offer triple play services to both business and residential subscribers.

Yozan Joins WiMAX Spectrum Owners Alliance

YOZAN has become the latest WiMAX operator to join the WiMAX Spectrum Owners Alliance (WiSOA), and company chairman Sunao Takatori has been elected to serve as a WiSOA board member. YOZAN is the first to adopt and provide WiMAX services in Japan and is focused on providing services throughout areas of Tokyo, prior to expanding services to Osaka, Nagoya, and Kyoto. The company operates over 4.9GHz, which is a semi-licensed, registered spectrum in Japan.

Fujitsu Improves WiMax Efficiency

KDDI has announced early results from their joint R&D with Fujitsu Labs on energy and cost saving measures for future WiMax base stations. Nitride gallium HEMT, a stronger semiconductor material than conventional silicon, was used in a field experiment which achieved electric power output of 25W and operation frequency 2.5GHz. According to the statement they recorded electric power efficiency of the transmission amplifier at 30% improvement over previous attempts.

Hitachi Unveils World's Smallest RFID

According to AP, Hitachi recently unveiled RFID chips that are just 0.002 inches by 0.002 inches and look like bits of powder. They’re thin enough to be embedded in a piece of paper, company spokesman Masayuki Takeuchi said Thursday. Shown to the public for the first time earlier this month, the new chip is an improvement on its predecessor from Hitachi — the Mu-chip, which at 0.4 millimeters by 0.4 millimeters, looks about the size of the period at the end of this sentence.

DoCoMo Achieves 5Gbps Data Speed

NTT DoCoMo just announced it has achieved a maximum packet transmission rate of approximately 5Gbps in the downlink – claiming a World’s First – using 100MHz frequency bandwidth to a mobile station moving at 10kmh. The field experiment 4G radio access took place in Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture on December 25, 2006. After having achieved a maximum speed of 2.5Gbps in December 2005, DoCoMo doubled the speed in the more recent test by increasing the number of MIMO transmitting and receiving antennas from six to 12 each, and by using proprietary received signal processing technology.
