Dilithium Networks Reaches 80% Market Share in 3G Video Telephony Test Market

Dilithium Networks, a leading provider of wireless multimedia solutions, announced today that NEC, one of the largest 3G handset vendors has purchased Dilithium Network Analyzer, further confirming our leading position in the 3G video telephony test market. Dilithium Networks estimates that 80% of 3G Mobile operators, network equipment vendors, and handset manufacturers use Dilithium Networks Analyzer (DNA) to perform 3G-324M protocol compliance, interoperability testing and QoS measurements of mobile networks.

KDDI Offering 3G Data Services with Starent Networks Solution

KDDI Corp., a leading CDMA2000 mobile operator in Japan, has deployed Starent Networks’ high-performance core network platform for its 1xEV-DO network at 800 Mhz. The Starent ST16 Intelligent Mobile Gateway is providing high-speed data services to KDDI’s subscribers through its CDMA 1X WIN broadband service. KDDI has the largest CDMA network in Japan with more than 18 million subscribers and has the most 3G subscribers in the country with over 16.1 million. The Japanese mobile communications market has long been one of the largest and most progressive, with a projected $13.4 billion in data revenue for 2004. This makes it the world’s largest market with two to three times the revenue of other leading countries according to analyst firm Ovum.

DoCoMo Releases N900iL Handset

DoCoMo announced today the N900iL [WWJ video here], a dual-network WLAN/3G FOMA handset. The phone will be released on 16 November 2004. The N900iL is specifically designed to support DoCoMo’s exclusive PASSAGE DUPLE system for dual-network operation as both a standard FOMA phone and a VoIP mobile phone over a corporate user’s internal wireless LAN.

Nissan Wings Mobile Navigation

Nissan Wings Mobile NavigationNTT DoCoMo and Nissan Motor are flying in tandem through a new tie-up between i-mode and the carmaker’s Carwings navigation system. The new service, Okutto-Keitai, allows drivers to receive destination-based i-mode digital maps and restaurant data via their NTT DoCoMo mobile handset. Drivers can also request information from Carwings’ live operator or by selecting information manually through the navigation system. Digital maps are provided by Zenrin; restaurant information through Gourmet Navigator, Inc.

Given the GPS technology on many wireless handsets these days plus the rich variety of navigation content sites, the main offering navigation systems have going for them is bigger screens. DoCoMo competitor KDDI would have you just lose the navigation console completely and rely on their increasingly micro-comprehensive 3G “Navi” systems. Nevertheless, automotive electronic devices continue to show strong growth here. A recent survey of auto parts makers by the Nihon Keizai Shimbun (Nikkei) estimates sales of auto electronic devices — including car navigation systems — will hit 2.79 trillion yen for the fiscal year ending March 2005.
