Korea is set to launch the controversial W-CDMA mobile service in December, despite growing concerns about overlapping investment and the poor chance of commercial success. SK Telecom Co., the country’s largest mobile carrier, and KTF Co., ranked second, said they would push ahead with W-CDMA services, as planned.
Not only is Nokia facing intense competition from rival manufacturers, but its relationship with its customers, such as Vodafone and mmO2, is becoming increasingly tricky too. Yesterday the Finnish press was full of comments made by Peter Erskine, the chief executive of mmO2, who claimed 3G handsets starting to appear from Asian manufacturers were generally superior to Nokia’s.
The developer of China’s first 3G mobile phone set using Chinese standards signed a letter of intent on Sunday with a telecom company on commercialization of the product. Under the deal, the Chongqing Institute of Posts and Telecommunications, the developer, and China Putian Corp, the country’s largest telecom equipment supplier, will jointly set up a production base in Chongqing Municipality, southwest China, for manufacturing TD-SCDMA 3G mobile phones.
The government is expected to invest 1.4 billion yuan (US$168.7 million) to aid the development of a homegrown standard for 3G mobile communications, according to industry insiders. Industry analysts say the new financing, along with a recent government decision to delay issuing 3G licenses to 2005, shows Beijing is determined to support a domestic standard rather than relying on foreign technology.
SK Telecom Co., South Korea’s top mobile carrier, may be named an “unreliable listed company” after it missed the deadline for issuing a public notice. On the evening of Oct. 31, SK Telecom, the second most valuable stock on the Seoul bourse, quietly announced it had been sued by its rival KTF Co. for allegedly defaming the rival’s corporate integrity.
A mobile phone subsidiary of Japan’s home electronics giant Matsushita said it has set up a joint venture with a US firm in China to develop 3G mobile networks. Capitalized at 10 million dollars, Universal Communications Technology Co. Ltd., located in the eastern Chinese city of Hangzhou, will also market the 3G networks in China.
