Unicom to Sell Both Networks?

China Unicom, the smaller of the mainland’s two mobile operators, will not receive one of three 3G mobile licenses from the government and its parent will be forced to sell both its networks to China Telecom and China Netcom, the National Business Daily reported Friday. Citing industry sources, the Shanghai government-affiliated newspaper said China Unicom’s parent, China United Communications, will sell its GSM network to China Telecom, and its CDMA network to China Netcom.

China's Exclusive Mobile TV Drama

China’s first TV drama to be shown exclusively on mobile phones will begin shooting on 27 March. Entitled “Appointment,” it will have five parts, with each only lasting five minutes. Catering to the interests of young people, who are more likely to watch TV plays on mobile phones, the drama is a romantic love story between a beautiful girl and two motorcycle riders, revealed Liu Hong, an official with the Beijing-based Leshi Media Group.

Samsung Electronics continued its relentless stream of innovations on Monday by announcing it will put out a music phone [.jpg image] with built-in wireless LAN and a powerful sound system at the end of the month. Microsoft’s mobile operating system, Pocket PC 2003 Phone Edition, allows use of applications like Outlook, Word and Excel, while a 520-MHz CPU and 1.3-megapixel camera are also part of the gadget.

LG Demonstates 3.5G HSDPA

LG Electronics announced they have successfully demonstrated 3.5G high-speed data transmission at CTIA Wireless 2005, taking place in New Orleans, March 14-16, using Lucent Technology’s 14-Mbps download-supportive W-CDMA system, as well as the company’s own HSDPA-enabled mobile phone. According to the company, the model is the same used in a successful test run at Nortel Lab on 6 March, the first of its kind in the world.

IEC Broadband World Forum Asia

The Broadband World Forum Asia, which is officially sponsored by NTT, will be presented May 30-June 2 at the Pacifico Yokohama convention center. The International Engineering Consortium (IEC). IEC announced that Japanese companies like NEC, Fujitsu, Oki Electric, Alaxala and many other multinational corporations, such as Motorola, Siemens and Alcatel will attend. NTT Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Norio Wada is official conference chairperson.
