Japan Telecom – Guessing Game
British mobile giant Vodafone has Japan on tenterhooks by continuing to remain mum on its deal to sell the core fixed-line business of the Japan telecom group to Ripplewood Holdings or other buyers.
Vodafone acquired the majority of 66.7% shareholding in the country’s third largest fixed-line operator, Japan Telecom, in 2001 for ・1.4 trillion (US$12 billion) in order to gain a controlling interest in J-Phone, the third largest mobile phone company in the world’s most sophisticated market. Japan Telecom was originally established as a subsidiary of the now-defunct Japan National Railways.
