Samsung Electronics Co. will debut on Aug. 30 the world’s first electronic signboard with a display that can be changed with a smartphone. A smartphone application will enable users to add text showing price reductions to photos of merchandise shot on their phones, for example. This content can then be transmitted to the digital display via a Wi-Fi network. Existing electronic signboards typically require a personal computer to edit content.
NTT DoCoMo Inc. will sell the electronic signboard, available with 32- and 40-inch displays, to business users for less than 200,000 yen. Signboard sales are targeted at 5,000 units a year. The system will be compatible with smartphones other than those from Samsung.
