ACCESS Partners with Datang to Power 3G Data Services in China
ACCESS, a global provider of Internet access technologies, today announced that ACCESS has partnered with Datang Mobile Communications Equipment Co., Ltd. (Datang), to provide the enabling technology for advanced mobile services over TD-SCDMA networks. Datang of China is a leading mobile technology provider and the creator of TD-SCDMA, China’s homegrown 3G standard. Under the agreement, ACCESS will work closely with Datang to jointly develop technology specifications and go-to-market business strategies for new client-end data solutions on 3G handsets. Further, ACCESS will provide its industry leading NetFront Mobile Client Suite, including key applications such as the micro-browser, messaging client and Java virtual machine to TD-SCDMA related handset vendors.
ACCESS’ NetFront was the first browser deployed over commercial 3G networks in Asia and Europe, and now boasts 4 million subscribers for NTT DoCoMo’s 3G FOMA service in Japan alone.
Mr. Qing CHU, Deputy General Manager of Shanghai Datang Mobile and General Manager of UE business department, stated, “As a fast developing 3G standard, TD-SCDMA has been well accepted with its advanced and mature technology. Competition in the 3G arena is not just among individual enterprises, but different business models and value chains as well. As a leader in TD-SCDMA, Datang Mobile is now developing a competitive TD-SCDMA value chain. In the handset market for example, Datang Mobile owns the core IPR of TD-SCDMA among other critical technologies such as protocol stack, power saving technology and development tools.”
With these state-of-the-art technologies, Datang Mobile has recently introduced a first ever TD-SCDMA LCR handset for MTNET. The company is also allying other partners like chipset vendors, applications vendors and content providers to deliver a total TD-SCDMA solution as well as reference designs for handset manufactures. As a strategic application software partner, ACCESS brings its extensive experience helping top mobile operators to succeed with their data services.
“We are confident about the bright future of IP data services over TD-SCDMA networks with its advantages in cost savings. In partnership with ACCESS, we are combining ACCESS’ expertise with our industry leading technology to speed the commercialization of TD-SCDMA, while ensuring mutual benefit for all parties in the TD-SCDMA value chain,” continued Mr. Qing Chu.
Pierre Suhandinata, President and CEO of ACCESS China Inc., stated, “We are thrilled to partner with Datang, the innovator behind the world-class 3G TD-SCDMA standard. Together, we will develop end-to-end solutions for the delivery of rich mobile applications and create a unique user experience on the advanced TD-SCDMA network. This is an exciting opportunity for ACCESS to contribute to the advancement of the Chinese 3G market.”
The TD-SCDMA standard was adopted by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) in May 2000 as an official 3G standard. It was adopted by 3GPP in March 2001 as one of the commercial standard for operators and mobile telecom manufactures. Among the three official 3G standards, TD-SCDMA is the only standard developed by a Chinese vendor, and has received significant support from China’s government and many leading global infrastructure and handset vendors.
