Disaster Proof Mobile Networks

A ‘Disaster-proof’ mobile networks project is in development by Japanese carriers with Tohoku University: http://bit.ly/IQwisd

As noted in Feb., there will be plenty of activity in this space here going forward [Eds]

Japanese telecom companies including NTT Docomo and KDDI are working with Tohoku University to strengthen their mobile networks against the strain of natural disasters. Nikkei reports that during the tragic March 11th 2011 earthquake and tsunami the networks were overloaded by people trying to confirm others’ safety, and the problem was compounded by the destruction of several base stations.

The companies are currently exploring ways to divert traffic to wireless networks or different base stations in that event, along with the ability to quickly construct new stations and replace important lines of communication with satellite links. The technology is being tested in regions of Tohoku affected by last year’s disaster, and the plan is to have it in place within three years. While each company is developing its own technology separately, the Japanese government is pushing them to cooperate on a wider network. Via The Verge.
