QUALCOMM and ACCESS Bring i-mode to MSM Chipsets

Collaboration Delivers Rapid Entry to Global i-mode Market for QUALCOMM’s OEM Partners. QUALCOMM Incorporated, pioneer and innovator of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) and other cutting-edge wireless technologies and ACCESS Co., Ltd., a global provider of mobile content delivery and Internet access technologies, today announced that ACCESS’ i-mode Global Profile, a profile in ACCESS’ NetFront™ Mobile Client Suite, will be supported on QUALCOMM’s Mobile Station Modem™ (MSM™) chipset solutions. The availability of ACCESS’ i-mode Global Profile solution on select MSM chipsets provides device manufacturers with accelerated entry into the global i-mode market and ensures a wide variety of next-generation devices for i-mode operators.

“Enabling ACCESS’ i-mode Global Profile solution for QUALCOMM’s popular MSM chipsets delivers a significant new opportunity for mobile device manufacturers to enter the i-mode market,” said Toru Arakawa, president and chief executive officer of ACCESS. “We’re pleased to collaborate with QUALCOMM to support a rich, useful and consistent end-user experience for i-mode subscribers.”

“We’re excited to work with ACCESS to provide a solution that further advances the deployment and adoption of new 3G handsets and services, while maximizing the full benefits of our Launchpad multimedia suite,” said Luis Pineda, senior vice president marketing and product management for QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies. “This solution significantly streamlines development requirements for device manufacturers to greatly expand the worldwide availability of i-mode-based WCDMA handset models.”

QUALCOMM and ACCESS are working together to optimize and port ACCESS’ i-mode Global Profile solution to select MSM chipsets. The i-mode solution will be built entirely on QUALCOMM’s Open BREWapi™ software. Support for the solution will initially be available on the MSM6250 chipset, part of QUALCOMM’s Multimedia Platform of single-chip solutions that deliver engaging multimedia devices and applications. Other chips in the Multimedia and Enhanced Multimedia Platforms are also planned to support i-mode. ACCESS’ i-mode Global solution will be available directly from ACCESS to handset manufacturers.

Multimedia and Enhanced Platform chipsets support the Launchpad suite of advanced multimedia, connectivity, position location, user interface and removable storage functionality, including QUALCOMM’s gpsOne solution, the world?fs most broadly deployed assisted-GPS handset technology.

The Multimedia and Enhanced Multimedia Platform chipsets also support the BREW solution which enables the development and monetization of advanced applications and content, allowing operators and OEMs to differentiate their products and services and increase revenues. QUALCOMM’s chipsets are also compatible with the Java runtime environment (J2ME) which can be built entirely on the chipset as an extension to the BREW client.

The i-mode Global Profile is one profile in ACCESS’ NetFront Mobile Client Suite. NetFront Mobile Client Suite takes phoneware to new levels of efficiency and functionality by providing an integrated, customizable user-interface architecture, advanced browser, multimedia messaging client (MMS), Java support and more. Leveraging ACCESS’ extensive mobile technology experience, NetFront Mobile Client Suite is a highly integrated, flexible, modular and extensible solution that dramatically reduces development time and costs, allowing manufacturers to rapidly introduce advanced new mobile devices to markets throughout the world.
