• Korea Chooses New WiBro Standard

    The Ministry of Information and Communication decided to adopt the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.16x , the broadband wireless access platform as the standard of WiBro (Wireless Broadband), portable Internet service that will be commercialized in Korea from 2006. The MIC also said that it would designate a portable Internet service provider that can offer broadband Internet services available on the move in February 2005.

    The MIC said Thursday that five criteria including IEEE 802.16 standard that reflects TTA standard, service quality and efficiency in spectrum use were considered in selecting the portable Internet service standard.

    According to the ministry, portable Internet service providers should ensure 128kbps or higher of minimum transmission data rate in uplink and 512kbps or higher in downlink at a cell boundary when a user moves at 60km/h; higher than 9 MHz of channel bandwith; roaming between equipment of service providers; frequency reuse factor of 1; TDD duplexing for frequency interference control and time slot synchronization.
