i-Mode Clone Grows Quietly in France

Launches of the Japanese mobile media platform stalled elsewhere in Europe. But France’s Bouygues Telecom successfully duplicated the Japanese wireless carrier’s development and marketing strategies — right down to the last pixel.

After weak overseas launches and ever weaker subscriber growth throughout 2002 and 2003, Japanese wireless carrier NTT DoCoMo announced earlier this year that users of its mobile media platform, i-mode, outside Japan finally exceeded two million. The company says that number has started to grow rapidly.
