NTT DOCOMO, INC. today unveiled the docomo Smartphone Xperia PLAY SO-01D, a PlayStation Certified smartphone that delivers a unique combination of smartphone functionality and immersive gaming. Sale begins in Japan this fall.

In landscape mode, the Xperia PLAY SO-01D boasts a slide-out gaming control equipped with two analog touch pads and left/right shoulder buttons, including a digital D pad and four action buttons with signature icons — cross, square, circle and triangle. Xperia PLAY Game Launcher, an exclusive app from Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications, enables users to find content designed specifically for the Xperia PLAY. Users also can enjoy a huge assortment of games from PlayStation Store, Android Market, game-maker sites and more.

In portrait mode, the Xperia PLAY SO-01D offers all the benefits associated with Sony Ericsson’s existing range of high-spec Xperia smartphones, including extra-fast HSDPA downlink (max. 14 Mbps) in DOCOMO’s FOMA HIGH-SPEED service areas. The Android smartphone provides best-in-class entertainment experiences thanks to its 4.0-inch VGA display, Flash Player 10.3 and POBox Touch 4.3, a unique predictive text-input system for fast, easy typing in either Japanese or English.

Pre-orders for the Xperia PLAY SO-01D will be accepted from the middle of October at docomo shops.
