  • DoCoMo Signs New Deal with Aquafairy

DoCoMo just announced that it has signed a new basic agreement with Aquafairy regarding the companies joint R&D project for development of handset rechargers using Aquafairy’s hydrogen fuel cell technology. The agreement includes details of the development process and specifies the roles of each partner for the commercialization of the recharger.

Also, DoCoMo’s acquisition of a stake in Aquafairy based on a business and capital tie-up that was announced on September 11, 2006, is not going ahead, so each company will have a freer environment in which to pursue R&D and business development.

With the aim of ensuring fastest-possible commercialization of the handheld fuel cell rechargers, the two companies are further enhancing their partnership through this agreement, allowing them to promote product development and technical cooperation.

This is ’somewhat’ unusual for a previously announced capital tie-up to be reversed. It should be interesting to see which party has found another more attractive option. — Eds.
