Japan firms balk at MPEG-4 terms

Japan’s mobile video content providers are threatening to snub the MPEG-4 compression format–touted as crucial technology for delivering video to mobile handsets–unless the cost of using it comes down.

MPEG LA represents 18 patent holders, including Apple Computer and Sun Microsystems, that have claims on underlying MPEG-4 technology, a widely-used standard for compressing audio and video files for delivery to wired and wireless devices.
